August 2010 – Freeit & the City of Austin
August 5th, 2010 – Freeit Awarded $2.8M Contract with City of Austin to Provide Data Storage Solutions
Freeit Data Solutions, Inc., a City of Austin MBE/WBE corporation has been awarded a $2.8M contract with the City of Austin to provide Data Storage for the APD Digital Vehicular Video (DVV) Project. This project will outfit automatic digital video cameras in 550 APD patrol cars and 75 motorcycles by the spring of 2011. The digital video will be uploaded at each of the five city substations and data will be routed to a central site and retained accordingly. Implementation will be in a phased approach, beginning with the rollout of one APD substation in East Austin by January 2011.
The DVV project has been underway by the City for almost two years in an attempt to upgrade the antiquated technology in patrol cars and build better trust with the communities they serve. According to Council Member Sheryl Cole, “The goal is to take as much of the guesswork out of what happens at any particular incident between a person stopped by a police officer.” The cameras will automatically turn on when an office opens their patrol car door. “I think most of the police officers will tell you that they have VHS in their patrol cars and that they have been wanting this for years and years”.
